Staff Retreat

This weekend we had our staff retreat at a very nice restaurant that overlooks the ocean. The day started off with a fun activity where we learned about different personality types. David is "orange" which means fun/adventurous but also flaky/unorganized. Michelle is "blue" which means caring/compassionate but also mushy/bleeding heart. We had fun with it and took it with a grain of salt. Then we moved on to a section that was more pertinent to teachers but we found some of it interesting as well. It was all about learning styles and how to adapt to them in the classroom. We then had a wonderful lunch with endless food of every kind. Then it was off to the pool for rest and relaxation. This will be the last time we get a weekend off for quite some time now so we enjoyed every moment of it.

This was a really neat rock pier that was formed out of volcanic rock from the area. We are looking out on the Atlantic Ocean. Storms that start here turn into the Hurricanes that have been hitting Florida. Posted by Hello

This is Michelle with Snake Island in the background. When we were here before David went there from time to time to camp and fish for the weekend. Posted by Hello

This was a dock that was shaped like a boat. It even had a "helm." Posted by Hello

Michelle has been doing great job with the girl's devos. They really seem to enjoy them despite the tired look on the their some of their faces. Posted by Hello

The Prayer Box

We have started doing something new in the dorms that we are covering. Each day we have committed to pray for the kids but we also have placed "prayer boxes" in each dorm. The prayer boxes are a place for the kids to place requests which they might not disclose in the group setting or if they forget about a request. We will be checking these boxes and praying for the requests every day. As we are trying to find our niche here we decided that one thing we know for sure will be a help is prayer so that is where we will begin.

Sickness

We have been sick all this week and of course it is not fun in the intense heat. We have had fevers, other not so fun symptoms and generally no energy. We are beginning to feel a little better so we are hoping to be completely recovered by the end of the week.

Soap In The Water

Last night the boys had been washing dishes for about 15 minutes and had finished all the plates when the boy who was washing stopped. "I think I should put something in the water" he said. There was no soap in the water! I told him he needed to re-wash the plates and start paying a little closer attention. :) These guys are really amazing. One minute they're right on, the next they are well...

A New Dorm Student

Tonight we will have a student in one of our dorms. He missed the first few weeks of school because he was in Korea after his sister who graduated last year died as a result of an attempted abduction here in Dakar. The parents are Korean missionaries in Senegal but they are not returning for a time so he will be returning to school and living in the dorm until they return. I cannot even imagine all that he has been through in the past month. We will be lifting him up in prayer and doing whatever we can to wrap him and his family in Christ's love.

Locust

We recently had a locust invasion here in Dakar. These locusts have been travelling throughout west and central Africa and have found their way here. The governments of the affected countries are going to "go to war" with the locust by using their military to spread pesticide. I have an interesting link with more on this story...
